*Caim felt the steady rumble beneath his feet and in his chair. It matched the nervous energy he felt. All around the vehicle, other men sat the same as him. Forlornly, glaring at the floor. He thought back to what the stranger had said.
Caim had gotten used to meeting the same kinds of people with different faces. They all seemed to fall into neat little categories, but not this guy. He was weird. He also talked a lot. Caim remembered talking to him about seemingly innocent things like jobs and routine, then more interesting things like change and ambition. He had told Caim about how resistant everyone was to new things, even if they were better than what was all around them. That was depressing. But then he had said that all it took was one person to change that. Just one guy was enough make things better for everyone. That was deep. Then he had said that Caim was a guy who could do that.
Caim had believed him. He wasn't sure why, but this guy, he was really interesting, and convincing. He remembered something he had said...*
"Change is always slow, though." *Caim said.* "It's gotta go through procedures, one guy can't push it through."
"That isn't change." *The stranger said.*"That's a mask. Something that politicians use to disguise reinforcement of their personal protocols."
"There's a faster way, then?"
"There is. Force."
*Force. The word echoed in Caim's head. It made so much sense. They could ignore polite cries for help. They could ignore petitions. They could even ignore the very people who form the foundation of the society they exploit. But they could never ignore direct action.*
"Hey Caim." *Caim's eyes flicked up to one of the other guys in the vehicle.*"You're...you're sure about this?"
"Real sure, Droga. These are the bad guys, no matter what they say."
"But...this?"
"Yeah, this. Every other way is something they control. This is foreign to them." *He looked around at everyone else.* "Try to think big, guys. This is the first step in making everything better. No more getting stepped on. No more letting rich guys get away with murder. This is how we fight back. This is how we show them we aren't drones." *They all nodded and smiled a little. It was hard to justify it, but Caim just had. Leave it to him.*
*The hovervan shuddered to a stop, and the driver turned around and nodded to the Caim and his men. Caim nodded back, and each of the men slipped a three-hole mask over their face. They opened up the back and piled out into the street.
It was night, the street was empty. In front of them was a large, lavish building. Someone important lived here. Someone corrupt and dominating. Each of the men shouldered a bulky bag and entered. They walked straight to the elevators. The ride up was silent, except some shuffling and muted coughs. The doors opened with a soft ding and the shuffled out, down the hall. Just like the schematics said, the bedroom was at the end. They stacked up on the door and removed their equipment from their duffel bags. Zipping, clacking, and clicking filled the air. Then they nodded to each other and kicked in the door.*
*Their target awoke with a start, flailing in his bedsheets, he stared dazed into their bright flashlights, utterly at a loss. One of the assailants hit him in the head with the butt of their blaster rifle. He was alone, widowed years ago. No one would call for help.*
"Get it." *Caim ordered. One of the men produced a camera. He nodded to Caim.*
*The target was forced to his knees and looked blearily around him. He could barely form words to find out what was going on.*
"This is the beginning." *Caim said to the camera.* "This is change." *Saying any more would dilute the message. He turned and shot the politician in the head. The camera stopped recording, and the men hustled out back to the van, leaving the body where it lay.*
*From behind a screen, Jarypt carefully monitored the whole thing. His support had kept the men off the security cameras and the security systems within the manor silent. It was easy when things were still so small. Soon, he would need to play a larger role, but for now.
For now, it began.*
