Within the Crater

*Soon.

Soon the prize would be gathered.

She sat alone. Alone as always. Always unmoving.

Her visor stared forward into nothingness. She was the defender of this place; she was the protector of the Seed's grave. She was the Guardian.

Her role was clear: protect the Spread. The other agents were out furthering it. They were helping take the galaxy under the control of its rightful owners, one step at a time. But there was always the chance that someone would be able to push them back. To hammer them into submission.

But the agents would come here. When threatened on hostile worlds, when faced with imminent destruction, when in desperate times, its brethren would return here. For here, the Guardian reigned supreme. In this Crater, she would not be destroyed. And all those she protected would be safe while she lived.

Even the ones who felt so different, were still brethren.. in a way.*

Within the Crater

*Still she sat.

To an outsider, it would have seemed pointless. An absolute waste of talent. She, the Guardian, the Shield of the Corruption, had been relegated to this crater.

She had learned, though.

She knew that, when their borders were threatened, organics all responded the same way: they would force the encroaching threat out. There was little doubt in her mind that she could fight the battle single-handedly, but she wasn't going to invite open conflict.

No, she had been spending her time protecting the Spread in her own way. The Crater had become filled with the Corruption, the pathogen seeping down into the ground itself and worming its way down, branching out once it had gotten far enough below the surface. It would wait, always spreading, never surfacing, always biding its time.

Nothing would remove her from her post. No invader, no defender, nothing could stop the inevitable tide of Corruption.

She was the Shield.*
